His career came to a screeching halt when he suffered a severe stroke at the age of 42. Originally left-handed\, he could not use his dominant hand any longer.\nShortly after\, in 1990\, he immigrated to Israel with his family. The warm climate and proper medical care not only helped his physical recovery\, but also revived him as an artist. Zachar trained himself to paint with his right hand and became ever more productive.\nZachar’s paintings are influenced by the 20th century European masters and Russian Avant-Garde. They are done in so many styles that they might have been created by several different artists. His still lives\, landscapes and cityscapes are perfect in composition\, expressive brush technique and color scheme. \n\nFor those who are unfamiliar with the works of Zachar Shapiro\, these photos can give an idea of what you might expect to see. The photos are for your information only; not all of these works will be presented at the exhibition.

SUMMARY:The Levys of Monticello
DESCRIPTION:National Center for Jewish Film’s Annual Film Festival\nMay 7-23\, 2023\nCoolidge Corner Theatre\, Brookline\, MA\nAll screening in person – on the big screen! \nThe Levys of Monticello\nMASSACHUSETTS PREMIERE\n \n\n\nQ&A with Brandeis Professor Jonathan Sarna\, film participant \nThomas Jefferson started building Monticello in 1769 on the slave plantation he inherited from his father. Upon his death in 1826\, his heirs sold the property to pay his debts. This is the little-known story of U.S. Naval officer Uriah Phillips Levy\, a fifth-generation American Jew born in 1782 and admirer of Jefferson’s dedication to religious freedom\, and his nephew Jefferson Monroe Levy\, who rescued the property from bankruptcy and carefully preserved it for posterity. The Levy family would go on to own Monticello for nearly a century – far longer than Jefferson and his descendants. That the iconic Monticello was owned by Jews did not go unnoticed. Steve Pressman’s award-winning film uncovers the legacy of one of America’s oldest Jewish families while confronting the racism and antisemitism that are woven into our nation’s history. \nThe Levys of Monticello was produced under the aegis of The National Center for Jewish Film\, as were Pressman’s previous documentaries 50 Children and Holy Silence. \nDirector: Steve Pressman | USA | 2022 | USA | 71m | English \n— Preceded by — \n\nLIFE IS ALL THERE IS\n \nNEW ENGLAND PREMIERE\nIntroduction by Filmmaker Ron Blau \nA gem from award-winning Boston filmmaker Ron Blau (Our Time in the Garden). This sensitive\, inventive film about Blau’s German-Jewish father’s emigration to American in 1933 and subsequent challenges in the U.S. is told entirely through 8mm home movies his father shot in the 1930s. \nDirector: Ron Blau | USA | 2020 | 15m | English \nTickets

SUMMARY:Open Secret
DESCRIPTION:National Center for Jewish Film’s Annual Film Festival\nMay 7-23\, 2023\nCoolidge Corner Theatre\, Brookline\, MA\nAll screening in person – on the big screen! \nOpen Secret\n75th Anniversary – Rarely Seen Film Noir – Screening in 35mm! \n\n\nQ&A with Brandeis Professor Thomas Doherty\, Author Hollywood & Hitler \nNewlyweds Paul (John Ireland\, Academy Award nominee for All the King’s Men) and Nancy (Jane Randolph) stop in a small town to visit Paul’s army buddy\, Ed Stevens. Only Ed is missing\, and no one seems eager to locate him. Paul is further perplexed by the white supremacist tracts he finds hidden in his pal’s apartment. An undeveloped roll of film leads to a vandalized Jewish-owned camera store and a gang of American Nazis taking over the town. A low-budget\, hard-hitting cousin to Crossfire and Gentleman’s Agreement\, which also broached the taboo subject of antisemitism by name\, Open Secret is audacious for its time\, depicting postwar antisemitism in a working-class setting\, a Jewish character physically fighting back against his aggressors\, and illustrating how prejudice can easily coalesce into an all-American strain of fascism. Vienna-born John Reinhardt (High Tide\, Chicago Calling) assuredly directs this crime drama written by Henry Blankfort\, a screenwriter blacklisted during the McCarthy era\, and Jewish film & TV writer Max Wilk. THE PULL-NO-PUNCH DRAMA OF MEN CHAINED TOGETHER BY HATE! Special thanks to our colleagues at the UCLA Film & Television Archive for use of their archival 35mm print. \nDirector: John Reinhardt | USA | 1948 | 68m | English \n— Preceded by — \nA NIGHT IN THE GARDEN \nIn 1939\, 20\,000 Americans rallied in New York’s Madison Square Garden to celebrate the rise of Nazism – an event largely forgotten from American history. Marshall Curry’s Academy Award nominated film — which is made entirely from archival footage filmed that night — transports audiences to this chilling gathering and shines a light on the power of demagoguery and antisemitism in the United States. \n“As chilling and disorienting to watch as the most inventive full-length horror movie.” –The New Yorker\n“Eerily relevant.” –Rolling Stone \nDirector: Marshall Curry | USA | 2017 | 7m | English \nTickets
