DESCRIPTION:The Boston Festival Orchestra invites you to “Zara & Dimitri“\, a chamber music concert on Thursday\, October 15 at 7 PM at The Allen Center in Newton\, featuring music by two Soviet-era composers: Dmitri Shostakovich and Zara Levina. \nLevina is a particularly fascinating figure. A Jewish Soviet-era composer and contemporary of Shostakovich\, she was a successful composer and pianist during her lifetime\, but her music has largely disappeared from the classical canon. We’re excited to bring her music back into the concert hall and place it alongside the much better-known music of Shostakovich. Shostakovich was a highly scrutinized composer who composed under enormous pressure from the state\, but still found his own identity amidst the censorship.
