DESCRIPTION:Russian-Speaking Aliya in Israel: Identity\, Culture\, and Politics\nABOUT THE LECTURE:\nIsrael is the largest demographic\, cultural\, and political center of Russian-speaking Jewry (RSJ). Its community of more than one million Russian-speaking Israelis – most of whom arrived from the former USSR during the Great Aliya of the 1990s – has had a profound impact on Israeli socio-political\, cultural\, and economic life. \nTHE LECTURE WILL FOCUS ON:\nFormation and structure of the RSJ community in Israel\nRussian Aliya against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine\nEthnic\, civic\, and cultural identities of different waves of (post-)Soviet Aliya\nThe cultural impact of Russian Aliya on Israeli society\nThe ideological and political map of Russian Israel \nABOUT THE SPEAKER:\nDr. Ze’ev (Vladimir) Khanin is Associate Professor in the Department of Political Studies and Head of the Post-Soviet Conflict Research Program at the BESA Center for Strategic Studies\, Bar-Ilan University\, Israel. He previously served as Chief Scientist (Deputy Director General for Research) at the Israeli Ministry of Aliya and Integration. He is chief co-editor of the academic series Post-Soviet Jewry in Transition at De Gruyter-Brill.
