SUMMARY:The Deaf Community in Israel
DESCRIPTION:The Deaf Community in Israel: Israeli Dancer and Poet Tami Assouline in Conversation with Professor Marco Di Giulio \nNovember 8\, 2:20 – 3:40 PM ET\nVia Zoom \nRegister \nJoin us for a conversation with\, and performance by\, Israeli Deaf poet Tami Assouline. In her performances\, Assouline rejects the hegemony of the spoken word and describes her poetry as “a purely visual work of art—an expression of my movement and freedom in my own language.” Removed from the strictures of Hebrew\, her creative work explores such themes as love\, grief\, and the sensuality of the body.\n\nTami will perform her poetry and will discuss\, together with Dr. Marco Di Giulio\, the history\, memory\, and identity of the Israeli Deaf community. Live captions will be available.\n\nThis event is part of the “Performing Disability in Israel” series and is held in conjunction with Professor Ilana Szobel’s groundbreaking course\, Disability Cultures: Art\, Film and Literature of People with Disabilities.\nRegister \nMarco Di Giulio is an associate professor of Hebrew language and literature at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster\, PA. He has written on the vernacularization and standardization of Hebrew. He was a fellow at the Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies at the University of Oxford (UK)\, and his work has appeared in several peer-reviewed journals\, including Jewish Social Studies\, The Journal of Israeli History\, The Jewish Quarterly Review\, Modern Judaism\, Hebrew Studies\, History of Universities\, and Annali d’Italianistica. Currently\, he is completing a book manuscript on the history of disability in Israel. His most recent publication is “The Origins of Israeli Deaf Ethnicity\,” Jewish Social Studies 27.2 (2022): 144-182. Prof. Di Giulio is an alumnus of the Summer Institute for Israel Studies. \nTami Assouline is a multidisciplinary deaf creator—in movement\, dance and poetry. She is a sign language teacher and the daughter of a deaf family. She has written three books of poetry\, the most recent of these in deaf syntax\, and is working on a fourth book. Tami wrote the short film\, “Inner Flame” (2017)—now available at the Brandeis University Library—which tells the story of a deaf young woman auditioning for a renowned dance company who decides to hide her deafness from the audition panel and the other dancers\, fighting for her place on equal grounds. Tami’s ambition is to release a video and a bilingual book. Visit her website (in Hebrew). \nRegister

Their sessions are outstanding – innovative\, provocative\, fresh\, and fascinating! The full list of sessions is below. \nHere is a taste: \nNavigating Divisive Jewish Communities \nWe live in times during which the boundaries of communities are constantly being navigated and contested. We see these tensions everywhere from college campuses to social movements to synagogue communities. What orientations toward Jewish life\, Israel and American politics are considered within or outside the bounds? When we think about our Jewish community\, what is the value of having communal boundaries? What constitutes “membership” in any given Jewish community and what makes staying “in” compelling despite differences of opinion\, perspective\, or identity? What happens when disagreement threatens to destroy a community? How does a community maintain diversity even as it aspires to some shared values and norms and are there limits to this diversity? \nEmily Goldberg Winer is the Manager of Boston for Shalom Hartman Institute of North America and Director of Spiritual Engagement at Beth Sholom of Providence\, Rhode Island. She received her ordination from Yeshivat Maharat in Riverdale\, NY. SUMMARY:Multiple Perspectives on Death and Rituals Surrounding Death
DESCRIPTION:Multiple Perspectives on Death and Rituals Surrounding Death \nThursday\, February 9\, 3 p.m. \nKehillath Israel Sanctuary and on Zoom \n2Life residents are inspirational in the way they come together to form tight-knit\, supportive communities. These deep relationships are invaluable when a member of the community suffers a loss through death. Often\, friends do not know the customs surrounding the death of someone that is of another religion or culture and in fear of doing something disrespectful they are stymied and do nothing at all. \nThis learning symposium will be a step forward in breaking that feeling of helplessness in the face of others’ grief and our desire to console and offer friendship in a time of great need. \nTo learn more\, request list of speakers\, and get a Zoom link contact mskaza@2lifecommunities.org.

SUMMARY:Babyn Yar: Ukrainian Poets Respond
DESCRIPTION:Babyn Yar: Ukrainian Poets Respond\nDate: Wednesday\, March 8\, 2023\, 4:30pm to 6:00pm\nLocation: K-354 CGIS Knafel\, 1737 Cambridge Street\, Cambridge MA \nIn Person and Online \nOstap Kin\, editor and translator\nJohn Hennessy\, translator\nModerated by Oleh Kotsyuba\, Manager of Publications\, HURI \nAbstract\nOn September 29 and 30\, 1941\, Nazis executed 33\,771 Kyivan Jews by machine gun at a ravine near Babyn Yar. By the time the Soviet army recaptured Kyiv\, some 100\,000 to 150\,000 had been exterminated at the ravine. The name of Babyn Yar is now synonymous with one of the most horrific massacres of World War II. Babyn Yar: Ukrainian Poets Respond presents poems by Ukrainian Jewish and non-Jewish poets of the Soviet and post-Soviet periods\, written in response to the tragic and senseless mass murders at Babyn Yar. \nBabyn Yar editor and translator Ostap Kin and translator John Hennessy join us for a discussion of the Babyn Yar massacre and their new book (forthcoming from HURI)\, which presents this collection of poems in the original Ukrainian and English translation. In addition to offering historical background about the massacre\, they will read several selections and discuss the poems and art of translation. \nLearn More and Register

It has become\, and continues to be\, one of the most effective vehicles for convening our community to transmit memory and ensure an enduring commitment to preserving this critical legacy. \nAt a time when staggering numbers of young people are ignorant of this shameful chapter of history\, and as we witness antisemitism and hatred of all kinds of the rise\, this commemoration has become a powerful vehicle to counteract these troubling trends. \nPlease attend and invite others as well. \nRegister \nIt is possible to have on sight Russian captioning. A mobile device will be needed in order to view Russian captioning during the program.  \nRussian speakers OFF SIGHT will need to go into a zoom link for the program and then into a separate link in a different window to access the Russian or have 2 devices. so if you have 2 screens or someone has 2 devices etc. you’re fine.

PayPal (friends and family only) на yuliyashulman@yahoo.com или paypal.com/paypalme/yuliyashulman. Их вы также можете переслать их на yuliyashulman@yahoo.com или paypal.com/paypalme/yuliyashulman.
