SUMMARY:Russian Film Week
DESCRIPTION:Russian Film Week in New York (RFWNY) was co-founded and successfully re-launched by the 501(c) (3) non-profit arts organization\, Cherry Orchard Festival Foundation (USA) and Rock Studio Films (Russia) in 2018. This partnership aims to develop a multi-state\, annual week-long showcase\, in an effort to present independent\, commercial\, documentary and arthouse Russian films with subtitles to mainstream US audiences. \nOver 18 events were presented during the first Russian Film Week in December of 2018\, including free and paid screenings\, movie premieres\, screenings and events for kids\, free community events\, panels\, Q&A discussions with artists and directors\, press events\, and opening/closing night private/semi-private receptions. In June of 2019\, Russian Film Week in New York started a new initiative to promote Russian movies: we presented free screenings of two Russian films (with subtitles) at New York’s Wolfe’s Pond Park in Staten Island\, as part of the NY City Council’s Cultural Initiative\, supported by New York City Councilman Joseph C. Borelli (district 51). \nVisit russianfilmweekusa.com to learn more\, view festival program\, and buy tickets. \nTickets \n

SUMMARY:3GNY Stories Live: WEDU Wednesdays Featuring Alison Berg
DESCRIPTION:3GNY Stories Live: WEDU Wednesdays\nFrom a Hungarian Matzo Factory to a Nazi Airplane Factory \nFeaturing Guest Speaker Alison Berg\nWednesday\, January 20\, 2021 | 8:00 pm ET | Virtual Event on Zoom \n\n\nAlison will share the story of her maternal grandmother\, Anna Kohn\, who grew up in Hungary and worked in the small matzo factory her family owned\, which was right next to their home. Anna learned the mechanics of the factory and worked there while attending higher-level schooling in the nearby city as she studied to become a surgeon. \nLate into the war\, Anna was separated from her mother and taken from her home. She was held in a ghetto and transported to Auschwitz before being sent to Sachsenhausen to work at a Nazi airplane factory. With instincts\, faith\, and a strong will\, she was able to not only survive\, but rebel in small but lifesaving ways. \nAlison Berg\nAlison Berg is the granddaughter of two Holocaust survivors\, and grew up in New Jersey minutes away from the chicken farm her grandparents owned upon arriving in America. She graduated from the University of Michigan with degrees in Communications and Political Science\, and now works as a director at a communications firm specializing in nonprofit clients — using storytelling to advocate for meaningful causes and enhance their impact. \nAfter hearing stories in pieces over the years\, Alison joined WEDU in January 2019 and put the full narrative of her grandmother’s life together to share with students. Her participation in the program was inspired by a conversation with her little sister in the BIg Brothers BIg Sisters program\, who was shocked to learn she was just one degree of separation from a real survivor\, and that someone from that historical period could still be alive. \nAlison hopes her participation in 3GNY helps students more easily connect to the not-so-ancient history\, realizing what hate and intolerance is capable of destroying\, and what faith and love is capable of surviving. \nRegister

SUMMARY:3GNY Stories Live: WEDU Wednesdays Featuring Jenna Polivy
DESCRIPTION:3GNY Stories Live: WEDU Wednesdays\nFrom Darkness to Light\nFeaturing Guest Speaker Jenna Polivy\nWednesday\, January 6\, 2021 | 8:00 pm ET | Virtual Event on Zoom \n\n\nJenna Polivy\, a granddaughter of two Holocaust survivors\, was fortunate enough to spend much of her childhood with her loving grandparents. Her grandmother\, Dina\, was on the second transport of Jewish women to Auschwitz\, where she miraculously survived for over three years. Her grandfather\, Elias\, escaped from a Dutch labor camp and spent the war in his native Amsterdam under a false identity\, narrowly escaping capture multiple times. \nJenna will focus on Grandma Dina’s story. Grandma Dina preferred to discuss her idyllic childhood in Poland rather than her experiences during the war. Although Jenna knew that Grandma Dina had been in a concentration camp during the war\, she didn’t fully appreciate the horrors that Dina had to endure until she read a book (Rena’s Promise: A Story of Sisters in Auschwitz) authored by Grandma Dina’s sister\, and heard Grandma Dina’s video testimony\, which Jenna discovered by chance during a visit to the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York City. \nJenna Polivy\nJenna became a 3GNY speaker in 2016 to share the lessons she learned from her grandparents about resilience\, perspective\, the importance of family\, and the significance of small acts of kindness. \nJenna lives in Manhattan with her husband\, who is also a 3G. She has a B.A. from Hamilton College and a J.D. from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law.  She is currently a Business Development Manager at a large law firm in Manhattan. \nRegister

SUMMARY:Playground of the Autocrats
DESCRIPTION:Playground of the Autocrats: Zoom Conversation with Artist Anne Bobroff-Hajal\nThursday\, December 10\, 2020\, 5:30 – 6:30 pm \nJoin us for our first creator conversation with painter and historian Anne Bobroff-Hajal\, whose show\, Playground of the Autocrats\, is on view at the Museum of Russian Icons untill January 24. \nAnne Bobroff-Hajal draws from the visual languages of iconography and graphic art to create large-scale paintings that feature satirical commentaries on Russian socio-political history. On view at the Museum of Russian Icons in Clinton\, MA through January 24\, 2021\, Playground of the Autocrats presents stunningly complex triptychs and polyptychs that represent a secular art tradition directly influenced by orthodox iconography\, animation\, political cartoons and graphic novels–all of which tell stories in pictures and words. Video visit of the show >. \nOur event offers the opportunity to hear the artist speak about her unique creative process and converse with her about the images and ideas that informed the works. The Zoom call\, moderated by BRAI Executive Director\, Anna Winestein\, will begin with a brief presentation by Anne Bobroff-Hajal\, and feature mostly interactive discussion allowing participants to engage the artist and each other. Registration is FREE\, but required. Sign up here > \nThe Zoom link will be emailed through Eventbrite to registered attendees 24 hours and 2 hours before the start time of 5:30 pm. Sign up at autocrats.eventbrite.com \nSign Up \n\nAnne Bobroff-Hajal has drawn on animation techniques\, icons\, and formats such as graphic novels to tell stories of Russian geography and history from Ivan the Terrible and Peter the Great to Stalin and Putin. Satirical commentaries on how Russia’s ruling elites have historically taken advantage of their unique geographic situation to amass and maintain power\, she means for her art to honor and serve the dispossessed and forgotten. \nSays Bobroff-Hajal of her work\, “My extensively researched satirical polyptychs about Russia…revel in the crazy-quilt intersection of art with academic history and geography.” \nA resident of Westchester\, NY\, Bobroff-Hajal has a Ph.D. in Russian history and is the author of the scholarly volume Working Women in Russia Under the Hunger Tsars. Her artwork has been widely exhibited and is held in private collections internationally. Most recently\, Columbia University’s Harriman Institute for Russian\, Eurasian\, and East European Studies had a solo exhibit of her art about Russia titled “Peasants\, Clans\, and Effervescent Absolutists!” \nSign up for FREE to join the conversation with Anne at autocrats.eventbrite.com \nSign Up

SUMMARY:3GNY Stories Live: WEDU Wednesdays Featuring Yoni Litwok
DESCRIPTION:3GNY Stories Live: WEDU Wednesdays\nThe Quest for a Hidden Torah\nFeaturing Guest Speaker Yoni Litwok\nWednesday\, November 11\, 2020 | 8:00 pm ET | Virtual Event on Zoom \n\n\nIn 2018\, Yoni discovered testimony his grandfather\, Zygmunt (Ziggy) Litwok\, a Holocaust survivor\, had provided to the Shoah Foundation. Ziggy described that after the Nazis invaded his hometown\, the Jews were notified that the synagogue would be destroyed. Late that night\, they snuck into the synagogue\, took the Torah scrolls to the local Jewish cemetery\, and hid them. \nZiggy wanted to go back and recover the hidden Torah scrolls. However\, he did not have the opportunity prior to his sudden passing in 2002. \nAfter hearing this story\, Yoni embarked on a journey\, to see if he could trace his Papa’s roots and find the hidden Torah. Through a series of improbable events and remarkable people\, Yoni found himself in Poland\, learning more about his family than he could have ever imagined. \nJoin Yoni Litwok as he takes you on “The Quest for a Hidden Torah”\, a story of incredible perseverance and revelation. \nYoni Litwok\nYoni was born in Israel and raised in Marlboro\, New Jersey. He graduated from Brandeis University as an Economics major\, and after a brief Wall Street career\, switched paths and attended Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. SUMMARY:ZOOM PLAY “FOOLS” by Neil Simon – Andover Outing Theater - Act 2
DESCRIPTION:The “Zoom Play” became our signature format after the premier of “Travel Agency” by Elena Ulanovsky performed by Andover Outing Community Theater Group. \nThe next show on the roster is the famous play “Fools” by Neil Simon. \nThe premiere of Act 1 will take place on November 4th\, 7:30pm followed by Act 2 on November 11th\, 7:30pm. Please donate $25 (or more) to the Israeli kids from Ariel Youth Video/Theater Studio and you will get ZOOM LINK to see both shows! \nhttps://rjcf.com/donate/?name=Ariel \n\nLeon Tolchinsky is ecstatic. He’s landed a terrific teaching job in the Jewish-Ukrainan village Kylenchikov.  When he arrives\, he finds people sweeping dust from the stoops back into their houses and people milking upside down to get more cream. The town has been cursed with Chronic Stupidity for two hundred years\, and Leon’s job is to break the curse. No one tells him that if he stays over twenty-four hours and fails to break the curse\, he too becomes stupid. But he has fallen in love with a girl so stupid\, she has only recently learned how to sit down.\n\n“Fools” by Neil Simon is a comedy that is sure to keep you laughing the entire show. \nThe characters are all very different from each other and our talented actors from Andover Outing Community Theater are showing a whole spectrum of funny and stupid dialogs. \nWhen put onto one stage\, their dynamic will be sure to keep you laughing with their foolish dialogue until your stomach hurts. \nThe play allegedly was written as the result of an agreement Simon made with his wife during their divorce proceedings. She was promised the profits of his next play\, so he attempted to write something that never would last on Broadway. Here we are!

SUMMARY:INSULTED. BELARUS(SIA)
DESCRIPTION:ARLEKIN PLAYERS THEATRE and CHERRY ORCHARD FESTIVAL PRESENT \nINSULTED. BELARUS(SIA)\nA READING OF THE NEW PLAY BY BELARUSIAN PLAYWRIGHT ANDREI KUREICHIK \nOctober 18 and 25 and November 8\, 2020 \nNeedham\, MA – Arlekin Players Theatre\, and its presenting partner Cherry Orchard Festival in NY\, will present two virtual readings of Insulted. Belarus(sia)\, a new play by Andrei Kureichik\, with English translation by John Freedman. The play will be presented in Russian on Thursday\, September 17 at 8:00 pm (Directed by Igor Golyak)\, and in English on Monday\, September 21 at 8:00 pm (Directed by Blair Cadden). Both readings will offer a post-show discussion with the playwright\, who is currently in hiding from Berlarus authorities. \nThe readings will take place online via the Zoom platform. Tickets are FREE\, but must be reserved in advance. For more information or to reserve a Zoom spot\, visit arlekinplayers.com or call (617) 942-0022. \nThe readings are happening World-wide through a number of organizations – see full list below. ““I am thrilled that Igor Golyak and Arlekin Players will be the first of over 20 companies in five countries to present “Insulted. Belarus(sia)\,” a brilliant and important new play\, to the public\,” says Translator John Freedman. “Written by Belarus’s top playwright as the revolution was happening all around him\, it is filled with drama\, pain\, and hope.” \nAndrei Kureichik is a well-known Belarusian playwright and a member of the Coordination Council of Belarus—a group working to lead the transition to a new government and institute free elections in the wake of the falsified election that took place this August and the massive\, ongoing protests that followed. Many members of this group are now in prison. Others have been forced into hiding or out of the country. Less than a week ago\, while in hiding\, Kureichik sent the text of his just-finished play to his translator with a request to quickly arrange readings so that others could know what they were experiencing. Within a week\, over twenty theaters have signed on to present readings\, and that number continues to grow. \nThe play tells the story of the first month of the Belarusian revolution\, its ups and downs on the eve of the inevitable democratization of the country after 26 years of dictatorship. All characters have real prototypes; in some you will recognize former and current leaders of the country\, in others – incredible Belarusians who have gone out to battle the totalitarian machine\, sometimes at the cost of their lives\, their freedom\, and their loved ones. They represent polar points of view in the awakened Belarusian society. The author seeks to understand how the Belarusian revolution differs from Prague in 1968\, Russia in 1991 and Ukraine in 2014. He tells of the tragic escalation of violence and repression employed by the authorities to repress freedom-seeking Belarusians with bayonets and clubs\, and how solidarity\, truth and faith in human values inevitably lead to victory over evil. \nArlekin Players’ Artistic Director Igor Golyak says\, “It’s quite gruesome and unbelievable what is currently happening in Balarus. People are being tortured\, found in forests\, randomly picked up by men with no identifiers as a reaction to hundreds of thousands of people peacefully protesting the falsified election. With the playwright in hiding and afraid for his life\, this play needs to be heard now!” Blair Cadden adds\, “It’s rare in the theatre to have the chance to tell a story while it’s still unfolding\, but thanks to this playwright’s talent and courage\, we’re able to do just that. It’s an honor to be part of telling this story\, and it’s incredibly exciting to put this virtual medium we’ve all been forced into to its best possible use—as a way to share an urgent\, important story quickly and widely.” \nArlekin Players Theatre was created in Boston in 2009 and has since toured to New York\, Chicago\, and Hartford\, as well as to international festivals in Russia\, Armenia\, Ukraine\, and Monaco. It’s current international virtual tour of State vs Natasha Banina has received World-wide acclaim\, including the New York Times Critics’ Pick. Arlekin has received multiple awards for its work including four 2020 Elliot Norton Awards from the Boston Theater Critics Association for its recent productions of The Stone and The Seagull. Alekin takes strong pride in their emphasis on self-identity; they are a company of immigrants performing works that play on the ideas of cross-culture\, home\, and traditions\, challenging the idea of nationality\, and finding common themes that unite us all. The company makes its home in Needham\, MA. For more information\, visit www.arlekinplayers.com. \nArtistic Bios \nIgor Golyak (Director\, Arlekin Founding Artistic Director) received the 2020 Elliot Norton Award for Outstanding Director for Arlekin’s The Stone and was also nominated in the same year for his direction of Arlekin’s The Seagull . He is an Associate Professor at the Boston Conservatory\, and has spent over a decade teaching the art of theatre. He is the founder of the Igor Golyak Acting Studio and Artistic Director of Arlekin Players Theatre which has won numerous awards in the United States and internationally. Arlekin Players Theatre is a multicultural\, multi-national collaborative that is growing year to year in the number of audience members\, company actors\, and volunteers. His theatre has been invited to perform on famous stages and at world-renowned festivals all over the world\, including Moscow Art Theatre\, and festivals in Yerevan\, Armenia\, New York City\, Chicago\, Lviv\, Ukraine\, Monaco\, and many others. \nBlair Cadden (Director) is a native of Charleston\, SC\, where she co-founded 5th Wall Productions\, a small and scrappy theatre company with a focus on new work. She is currently pursuing her MFA in directing at Boston University. Some of her favorite productions include Spring Awakening (5th Wall Productions)\, The Last Days of Judas Iscariot (Flowertown Players)\, Polaroid Stories\, and Time Stands Still (BU School of Theatre). Blair has previously collaborated with Arlekin Players as dramaturg for their 2019 production of The Seagull. \nAndrei Kureichik (Playwright) is one of the top playwrights\, screenwriters and producers in Belarus.
