Children who\, overnight\, have had to deal with the realities of missiles directed at them\, bombs falling around them\, and the fear that at any moment a family member or they themselves might die. \nUkraine Forward and Center Makor will bring this courageous production\, Mom on Skype with its Ukrainian cast to Brookline this August with your help. \nFor 3 weeks the young Ukrainian performers from The School of Open-Minded Kids Studio Theatre will rehearse\, interact with the Irondale Young Company and sample New York City’s cultural riches. They have also been invited by the organization Sing for Hope\, to a youth retreat in Ivoryton Connecticut where they will create theater and music with other American teens. \nWon’t you sponsor one of these visitors? His maternal grandfather was an artist\, Victor Chulovich. His parents\, Nikolay Butko and Marina Chulovich also are well regarded artists in Russia. When Viktor was young\, he used to watch his grandfather paint and was inspired to pursue a career as an artist. He studied art at the famous Moscow Art School\, which is well known for developing a high level of technical skills in its students. After graduating from the School\, Viktor studied and painted at the famous Academic Dacha of Artists\, which was founded by Ilya Repin. There he worked under the guidance of artists Alexey Gritsay\, Alexei and Sergei Tkachev. Their influence guided Viktor toward being a creative “en plein air” painter and an impressionist artist. \nViktor first came to America in 2002. Since then\, he has had many exhibitions in the Hamptons and Sag Harbor\, New York. He is a member of the Guild of Boston Artists and in September 2022\, won their Robert Douglas Hunter Award in a New England Regional Juried exhibition for his en plein air painting “Osprey’s Sunset”. In America\, Viktor has painted in Maine\, Vermont\, Boston\, Cape Cod\, Sag Harbor and New York. We first met Viktor in September 2022 at the Guild of Boston Artists reception\, and we fell in love with his style and vision immediately. What a continuation of the Russian school of impressionism in the United States! \nButko paintings are on display for the upcoming Holiday exhibition:\n“Christmas Tree Lighting Boston Common”\, oil on linen\, 25” x 30”\, 2018\n“Brooklyn Bridge”\, oil on linen\, 25” x 30”\, 2018\n“Main Street. DESCRIPTION:November is Holodomor Remembrance month! \nTo kick-off this month’s activities for our community\, the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America\, Boston Branch\, in conjunction with the Salem State University Alumni Association will open a month-long poster exhibit featuring the Ukrainian Famine Genocide\, the Holodomor\, of 1932-1933. \nThe opening ceremony will take place on November 3\, 2022\, at 4:00 pm at Salem State University\, the Berry Library at the Learning Commons. \nThe event is free and open to the public. University\, Government\, and Community representatives will participate in the program as well as Michael Sawkiw \, President of the U.S. Committee for Ukrainian Holodomor Genocide Awareness\, headquartered in Wash. D.C. DESCRIPTION:The Deaf Community in Israel: Israeli Dancer and Poet Tami Assouline in Conversation with Professor Marco Di Giulio \nNovember 8\, 2:20 – 3:40 PM ET\nVia Zoom \nRegister \nJoin us for a conversation with\, and performance by\, Israeli Deaf poet Tami Assouline. In her performances\, Assouline rejects the hegemony of the spoken word and describes her poetry as “a purely visual work of art—an expression of my movement and freedom in my own language.” Removed from the strictures of Hebrew\, her creative work explores such themes as love\, grief\, and the sensuality of the body.\n\nTami will perform her poetry and will discuss\, together with Dr. Marco Di Giulio\, the history\, memory\, and identity of the Israeli Deaf community. Live captions will be available.\n\nThis event is part of the “Performing Disability in Israel” series and is held in conjunction with Professor Ilana Szobel’s groundbreaking course\, Disability Cultures: Art\, Film and Literature of People with Disabilities.\nRegister \nMarco Di Giulio is an associate professor of Hebrew language and literature at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster\, PA. He has written on the vernacularization and standardization of Hebrew. He was a fellow at the Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies at the University of Oxford (UK)\, and his work has appeared in several peer-reviewed journals\, including Jewish Social Studies\, The Journal of Israeli History\, The Jewish Quarterly Review\, Modern Judaism\, Hebrew Studies\, History of Universities\, and Annali d’Italianistica. Currently\, he is completing a book manuscript on the history of disability in Israel. His most recent publication is “The Origins of Israeli Deaf Ethnicity\,” Jewish Social Studies 27.2 (2022): 144-182. Prof. Di Giulio is an alumnus of the Summer Institute for Israel Studies. \nTami Assouline is a multidisciplinary deaf creator—in movement\, dance and poetry. She is a sign language teacher and the daughter of a deaf family. She has written three books of poetry\, the most recent of these in deaf syntax\, and is working on a fourth book. Tami wrote the short film\, “Inner Flame” (2017)—now available at the Brandeis University Library—which tells the story of a deaf young woman auditioning for a renowned dance company who decides to hide her deafness from the audition panel and the other dancers\, fighting for her place on equal grounds. DESCRIPTION:The Mischlinge Exposé\nA lyrical and dynamic pianist\, Steinway Artist Carolyn Enger presents her multimedia program The Mischlinge Exposé at Center Makor. Interweaving video and audio testimony from Carolyn’s godmother and her father (both labeled Mischling\, Grade A by the Nazis)\, with the music of composers from the salon period who converted to Christianity in the decades before the war\, the program vividly illustrates what it was like to be between worlds in Germany in the first half of the 20th century. Through the telling of her family story\, Ms. Enger’s The Mischlinge Exposé directly addresses universally significant issues of the multi-layered concept of identity and inclusion; encouraging empathy\, tolerance\, and engagement. \nEnglewood pianist presents multimedia piece on her father’s wartime experiences\, Jewish Standard\, September 14\, 2017 \n\nTickets \n\nFree.
