Its community of more than one million Russian-speaking Israelis – most of whom arrived from the former USSR during the Great Aliya of the 1990s – has had a profound impact on Israeli socio-political\, cultural\, and economic life. \nTHE LECTURE WILL FOCUS ON:\nFormation and structure of the RSJ community in Israel\nRussian Aliya against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine\nEthnic\, civic\, and cultural identities of different waves of (post-)Soviet Aliya\nThe cultural impact of Russian Aliya on Israeli society\nThe ideological and political map of Russian Israel \nABOUT THE SPEAKER:\nDr. Ze’ev (Vladimir) Khanin is Associate Professor in the Department of Political Studies and Head of the Post-Soviet Conflict Research Program at the BESA Center for Strategic Studies\, Bar-Ilan University\, Israel. He previously served as Chief Scientist (Deputy Director General for Research) at the Israeli Ministry of Aliya and Integration. He is chief co-editor of the academic series Post-Soviet Jewry in Transition at De Gruyter-Brill. DESCRIPTION:The Boston Festival Orchestra invites you to “Zara & Dimitri“\, a chamber music concert on Thursday\, October 15 at 7 PM at The Allen Center in Newton\, featuring music by two Soviet-era composers: Dmitri Shostakovich and Zara Levina. \nLevina is a particularly fascinating figure. A Jewish Soviet-era composer and contemporary of Shostakovich\, she was a successful composer and pianist during her lifetime\, but her music has largely disappeared from the classical canon. We’re excited to bring her music back into the concert hall and place it alongside the much better-known music of Shostakovich. Shostakovich was a highly scrutinized composer who composed under enormous pressure from the state\, but still found his own identity amidst the censorship. We will begin with the story of Serach\, the daughter of Asher\, who is mentioned twice in Torah\, but has a richly developed folk tradition in midrash and other Jewish lore. \nBiography: \nRabbi Barbara Penzner served Temple Hillel B’nai Torah from 1995 until 2023\, when she became Rabbi Emerita. She is currently the Interim Executive Director of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical Association (RRA). \nAfter graduation from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in 1987\, Rabbi Barbara and her husband Brian Rosman made their home in Newton and Boston. She is among the founders of Mayyim Hayyim\, co-chaired the New England Jewish Labor Committee\, and served as president of the Massachusetts Board of Rabbis and President of the RRA. \nMoshe Waldoks \nWhat’s Kabbalah? \nWhat are the myths and truths about Kabbalah? I’ll present a short history of Kabbalah and its impact on Jewish life. \nWe’ll be introduced to the “Tree of Life”; to the Kabbalistic “Big Bang Theory; to the major Kabbalistic teachers and their descendants\, and more. There will be time for questions and comments. \nBiography: \nReb Moshe is the Rabbi emeritus of TBZ\, Temple Beth Zion\, an independent congregation in Brookline\, MA. He earned his doctorate in Jewish intellectual history at Brandeis University\, \nHe was ordained as a non-denominational rabbi by Rabbis Zalman Schachter and Everett Gendler\, of blessed memory. and Rabbi Arthur Green\, may he be enriched for a long life. \nReb Moshe was one of founders of the Tibetan-Jewish dialogue.\, The Jew in the Lotus describes our meeting with the Dalai Lama. His extensive repertoire includes leading baritone roles\, with his portrayal of Escamillo in Bizet’s Carmen receiving particular acclaim as well as the prestigious “Escamillio of the Year” award. He is also a celebrated concert artist whose repertoire spans opera\, classical song\, and popular international repertoire. His luscious baritone\, remarkable acting ability\, wonderful sense of humor\, and striking stage presence make Konstantin utterly irresistible on stage. \nElla Pasik — Piano\nAn accomplished pianist\, music director\, and artistic director originally from Ukraine and based in Israel\, Ella Pasik has had a distinguished career accompanying singers and instrumentalists internationally.
