ABOUT THE LECTURE:
Israel is the largest demographic, cultural, and political center of Russian-speaking Jewry (RSJ). Its community of more than one million Russian-speaking Israelis – most of whom arrived from the former USSR during the Great Aliya of the 1990s – has had a profound impact on Israeli socio-political, cultural, and economic life.
THE LECTURE WILL FOCUS ON:
Formation and structure of the RSJ community in Israel
Russian Aliya against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine
Ethnic, civic, and cultural identities of different waves of (post-)Soviet Aliya
The cultural impact of Russian Aliya on Israeli society
The ideological and political map of Russian Israel
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Dr. Ze’ev (Vladimir) Khanin is Associate Professor in the Department of Political Studies and Head of the Post-Soviet Conflict Research Program at the BESA Center for Strategic Studies, Bar-Ilan University, Israel. He previously served as Chief Scientist (Deputy Director General for Research) at the Israeli Ministry of Aliya and Integration. He is chief co-editor of the academic series Post-Soviet Jewry in Transition at De Gruyter-Brill. He is a frequent speaker on Israeli 9th Russian-Language TV channel (девятый канал/девятка).
