Contra Spem Spero – concert for Israel & Ukraine

Thursday, January 16th at 7:30pm
with mezzo-soprano Tanya Berthier, contralto Vira Slywotzky, and pianist Paul Carlson
Congregation Kehillath Israel – 384 Harvard Street, Brookline, MA 02446

About this event:
Join us for concert of folk and popular songs, arias and more in support of two humanitarian organizations, Dror Israel and Razom, one Israeli and one Ukrainian!
Ukrainian-Israeli mezzo-soprano Tanya Bertier and Ukrainian-American contralto Vira Slywotzky will sing in Hebrew, Ukrainian, English and Yiddish, accompanied by American pianist Paul Carlson.

All proceeds go to benefit the two non-profits, serving tens of thousands of displaced civilians in two countries, each fighting for a just peace.

The name of the concert is taken from an 1890 poem by Lesya Ukrainka, written in Ukrainian but titled in Latin. Contra Spem Spero can be translated as Against All Hope, I Hope. The poem’s themes of resilience, strength, and defiance are still relevant today, more than a century after it was written.
