preceded by Benjamin Zander’s legendary “Guide to the Music”

Saturday, February 24, 8:00 PM: Boston Philharmonic Orchestra 2024 opening concert preceded by Benjamin Zander’s legendary “Guide to the Music” talk at 6:45 PM

Ravel Pavane pour une infante défunte (Pavane for a Dead Princess)
Berg Violin Concerto
Liza Ferschtman, violin
Mahler Symphony No. 1

The program pairs Gustav Mahler’s first great work, his Symphony No. 1 with Alban Berg’s last—his Violin Concerto, written shortly before his death in 1935—chosen in part because Mahler and Berg share a personal connection: Berg’s Violin Concerto memorializes Mahler’s widow Alma’s daughter, Manon Gropius, who died at the age of 18. Dutch violinist Liza Ferschtman, who is well-known in Europe, but known only to Boston audiences from her previous appearance with the BPO in 2019, will be the Violin Concerto’s soloist. Her revelatory performance of the Beethoven Violin Concerto with Zander at that concert was named “Best Solo Performance in Boston” by The Arts Fuse. The title of the concert’s opening work, Ravel’s Pavane pour une infante défunte (Pavane for a Dead Princess) shares a similar theme with the Berg Violin Concerto, which is ”Dedicated to the memory of an angel.” Together the three works are connected in that they all require the utmost delicacy and refinement from the orchestra.
